Return Visit of the Bedford School Bus

A certain amount of excitement was evident among local people near the village shop on 20 August 2012 following an unusual arrival in the village; parked near the allotments was a green Bedford bus, none other than the one formerly owned by Percy Abbott and used to transport local children to and from school. The regular driver at that time was Bill Purchase for whom the bus was his pride and joy. Woe betide any youngster who didn't treat it with respect!

The bus was restored some years ago and ended up in Essex. When the new owner died his wife put it up for sale and a group of vintage motors enthusiasts living near Chichester combined resources to purchase the bus and get it in working condition again. These days it is used to raise funds for charity at events in Sussex.

Patricia and "Spike" Milligan, Doreen and Ian Johnson from Boxgrove and Jill and Jonathan Penn from East Lavant decided it would be an appropriate holiday for them to drive the bus back home to re-visit Piddletrenthide. To the delight of several lucky residents including young children, Mr Milligan agreed to drive them for a few short trips around the lanes. The hope is that the bus will return in the future possibly putting in an appearance at the village fete. Dave Bowen
